Quick Thought On Safety
by Dave
Wednesday, March 01, 2006
Back before I got an education I was talking with a guy who coaches football and suggested that I was glad I didn't have a son who wanted to play football. I played in high school until I suffered four injuries in two years, two of them concussions. The guy suggested I check out statistics on serious sports injuries because soccer, softball and baseball had more serous risks than football. He explained about Commotio Cordis (aka sudden cardiac arrest) wherein an athlete suffers a sudden blunt trauma to the chest (gets hit by a thrown ball, for example) which is then transmitted to the heart, disrupting it's electrical rhythm. This is frequently fatal even though the trauma appears to be benign and no other damage is done. The only appropriate response to such an injury is immediate artificial defibrillation as nothing else (CPR, for example) has any chance of saving such a child's life. Defibrillators are complex machines which cost a lot of money and require expensive maintenance.
I discussed this with you last July in an article about various safety issues. There is a device called the "Heart-Gard" which protects against Commotio Cordis. But it is a little unwieldly since it involves straps around the neck and shoulders. In another piece I wrote discussing safety issues I suggested the softball governing bodies work with manufacturers to develop good products which promote athletes safety. At the time I think I was mostly interested in protecting pitchers' faces. What I want to say today is, it is time for the baseball and softball governing bodies to work with manufacturers to prevent Commotio Cordis.
We make boys wear cups in all sorts of competitions. We require catchers and batters to wear certain equipment which has been developed to protect them. Still we don't even begin to address the most common cause of death on the diamond. The Heart-Gard is a step in the right direction but can't we do better?
I am suggesting that manufacturers of softball uniforms develop jerseys which contain something akin to the Heart-Gard. Maybe I am missing something here but it seems to me it would be a small matter to create a pocket in a jersey which would hold a thin plastic protective shield. Sure, it's hot out on a playing field and anything which causes a player to be even hotter can be problematic. But the type of protective guard I'm talking about could be thin and contain perforations similar to what is done with boy's protective cups. It need not impede a player's ability to throw or bat with no constrictions as the coverage area would be no greater than with the Heart-Gard. The additional cost of producing jerseys with this pocket would be pennies per shirt. And presumably the guard itself would be just a few bucks. These costs could easily be absorbed and Commotio Cordis could become an instinct species on the softball field.
